Why You Should Buy a Rigid Inflatable Boat

Have you ever considered buying a rigid inflatable boat (RIB) but didn't know where to start? Perhaps you recently saw a RIB tearing it up outside the harbor and wanted to feel the same thrill. Or you may have witnessed a family lounging off the coast of Catalina while the kids took turns snorkeling off the stern. Whatever brought you here, we are happy to answer any questions you may have about these popular and versatile boats.

Zodiac Pro 7 is a popular model for adventure-seekers.

First and foremost, RIB stands for Rigid Inflatable Boat. Another common name, RHIB, stands for Rigid-Hulled Inflatable Boat. Either way, we are talking about the same thing, and in this article will be referring to these boats as RIBs.

Rigid Inflatable Boats are known for their durability, stability, speed, and versatility, making them popular as recreational and professional boats. Over the years, we have seen a growing interest from the local surfing and diving community in Zodiac and Inmar lines. These boats are perfect for taking the gang out to some of the more epic spots up and down the coast.

Other uses include:

  • Recreational Boating: RIBs, such as the Zodiac Medline Series, are popular for recreational activities like fishing, water sports, sightseeing, and even whale watching! They are generally faster and more agile than traditional boats, making them fun for all experience levels. The "Deep-V' hull that many RIBS have makes for the ideal personal or commercial use vessel, especially in our local California Waters.
  • Professional Use: RIBs are used by a variety of professionals, including law enforcement, rescue teams, and military personnel. They are suitable for operations in rough or shallow waters and can be fitted with an impressive range of specialized equipment. Boats within the Zodiac MilPro and AKA lines are very popular amongst the professional community.

Key Features:

  • Safety: RIBs have a strong reputation for being very safe boats due to their stability and rugged construction. They are also relatively easy to operate, which can be crucial in emergency situations. The inflatable tubes on a RIB add buoyancy and are much more forgiving than a traditional fiberglass boat when it comes to docking.
  • Durability: RIBs are made with tough materials such as fiberglass and Hypalon, which makes them more resistant to damage and wear. This can make a RIB an excellent long-term investment for those who plan to use their boat frequently.
  • Speed and Agility: RIBs are generally faster and more agile than traditional boats, which can make them more fun to drive and easier to maneuver in tight spaces.
  • Customization: RIBs can be fitted with a range of specialized equipment and accessories, such as radar, GPS, and communications systems, to meet the specific needs of different users. We at Boat Specialists can help guide you down the right path for all your outfitting needs.

Why have a boat with Inflatable Tubes?

The inflatable tubes on a RIB add buoyancy to the boat, which keeps it afloat and stable in the water. This can be especially important in rough or choppy conditions or if the boat is heavily loaded. Inflatable tubes can be particularly useful for boats in shallow or rocky waters, as they can help protect the hull from damage. Everyone loves convenience; the tubes are relatively easy to install and remove and can be easily inflated or deflated as needed. This makes having a boat with inflatable tubes convenient for storage, transportation, and maintenance.

What is the difference between Hypalon and PVC?

A question that I am commonly asked is, "What is the difference between Hypalon & PVC?" Hypalon and PVC are two synthetic rubber types widely used for inflatable products and are most often found in RIB boats and Tenders. Some key differences between the two materials:

  • Chemical resistance: Hypalon is more resistant to harsh chemicals and UV radiation than PVC. It is also less prone to cracking or fading over time.
  • Durability: Hypalon is generally considered to be more durable and long-lasting than PVC. Hypalon has a higher resistance threshold to abrasion and punctures and can withstand higher temperatures for a longer period of time.
  • Cost: Hypalon is typically more expensive than PVC.
  • Environmental Impact: PVC is made from non-renewable resources and is not biodegradable, which makes it less environmentally friendly than Hypalon.
  • Weldability: PVC can be welded, while Hypalon cannot. This can be important for certain applications where a welded seam is necessary for strength or durability.

Both Hypalon and PVC are widely used for inflatable products, and which one is better depends on the specific needs and requirements of the boater. At Boat Specialists, we carry inflatables from the Zodiac family, such as the Medline, Pro, Open, and Yachtline. Additionally, we stock Inmar, AB, and Achilles Inflatables.

Inmar is highly sought after by both the professional and recreational boating community.

Most importantly, owning a RIB will allow you to partake in more...

Recreational activities: With the ability to add a Turbo Swing or Ski Mast, and a high power-to-weight ratio, RIBs can be used for many recreational activities such as fishing, water sports, and sightseeing.

Socializing: With a large, open floorplan and additional seating on the tubes, a RIB is the ultimate family-friendly fun.

Exercise: With so much open deck space, boats like the Zodiac Pro or Open Series can provide an opportunity for physical activity such as paddling, swimming, and scuba diving.

Stress relief: Being out on the water can be a great way to relax and de-stress, especially if you enjoy being in nature.

Investment: Depending on the type and size of RIB you buy, it can be a significant financial investment. Owning a boat can also provide opportunities for income generation if you choose to rent it out or offer it for charters. It is also not uncommon for these boats to gain a cult following, making them highly sought-after even decades after they were made.

Personal satisfaction: For some people, owning a RIB is a personal goal or a source of pride. The ownership experience associated with us at Boat Specialist will allow you to partake in a rewarding hobby that provides a sense of accomplishment and fulfillment.
